Batik

Interesting facts

Batik is the traditional fabric of Indonesia.
The word batik is thought to be derived from the word ‘ambatik’ which translated means ‘a cloth with little dots’. The suffix ‘tik’ means little dot, point or to make dots. A Javanese phrase for the mystical experience of making batik is ‘mbatik manah’ which means ‘drawing a batik design on the heart’.
What is Batik?
Batik is an ancient form of resist dyeing. Unwaxed areas of the fabric absorb dye while the waxed areas resist the dye. More wax is added to dyed areas preserving the new colour and then the fabric is dipped in another colour of dye. Then you fix the dye and remove the wax.
The wax can be applied using a tool, tjanting. A drawing pen with the hot wax inside.
Tips
Always use in a ventilated area.
Heat the wax to the lowest temperature, if the wax smokes it is too hot.
Do not leave unattended, as it is a fire hazard.
Do not use near water, the wax will spatter.
Make sure hair is tied back.
Supervise to ensure safer working.
Work with small groups so the pot does not get pushed over.
Have kitchen roll at hand to catch the drips.
